DIFFERENT TYPES OF MATTRESSES
In order to choose the right mattress, it is essential to have an understanding of the different types that are available in the market so that you can make an informed decision.
Let us go through each type of mattress in detail.
Innerspring Mattresses:
Innerspring mattresses are the oldest, most commonly used mattress design. They use a metal wire system combined with springs to create a support frame covered in fabric with cushioning material (like latex, foam or biofoam) used on top of the mattress for extra support. There are different types of spring mattresses available in the market.
Advantages
- They are great at offering full-body support.
- You can choose different firmness levels as per your convenience.
- They are generally budget friendly.
Disadvantages
- They can fail when it comes to pressure relieving.
- They are not the best option if you are looking for motion isolation.
- The springs can get noisy over time or even break.
- They can wear out quickly in comparison to other mattresses.
Foam Mattresses:
Foam Mattresses have become a more common choice worldwide. These types of mattresses are made of different types of foams out of which memory foam is quite well known.
Advantages
- Best for side-sleepers. These mattresses provide enough support.
- Memory foam mattresses are pressure relieving, and great for people with body pain.
- The feature of motion isolation works like a charm and is perfect for restless sleepers.
- These mattresses are durable as compared to spring mattresses.
Disadvantages
- If we are talking about foam in general, then certain types of foam can trap body heat making it uneasy for people to sleep.
- The softness your foam mattresses provide can lead to the sinking of the surface which might not be comfortable for everyone.
- They are slightly expensive.
Hybrid Mattresses:
As the name suggests, Hybrid Mattresses are made by combining the features of innerspring mattresses and foam mattresses. This creates an amazing blend of bounciness and support.
Advantages
- They are softer and do not sink, and hence they are both comfortable and supportive.
- The surface is pain relieving and provides a good amount of pressure relief.
- The temperature-regulating properties keep people cool all night.
- No motion transfer helps you get a sound, uninterrupted sleep all night.
Disadvantages
- Higher-quality hybrid mattresses can be a bit expensive.
- They can be heavier than other types of mattresses.
Latex Mattresses
A latex mattress is a type of mattress that combines either natural or synthetic latex with springs or another type of foam to create these unique mattresses. The latex that is used here is obtained from rubber trees. There are 2 methods that can be used:
- Dunlop Process: In this process, latex sap is harvested from the rubber trees, frothed and poured into a mould. This mould is then heated up which solidifies the latex. Through this process, you get a denser and firmer foam used for mattresses and pillows.
- Talalay Process: In this process too, natural latex sap is gathered from rubber trees and turned into a frothy mixture which is filled partially in a mould. The same mould is sealed and vacuumed to even out the latex within. After this, the mould is flash-frozen and baked. This results in a softer, airy and consistent foam.
Advantages
- It is bouncy in nature and sinks less which helps in providing great support to the back.
- It provides great spinal alignment and reduces the chances of body pain.
- It is breathable and has temperature-regulating properties.
- Latex Mattress has good motion isolation, making it easy for you to sleep like a baby.
Disadvantages
- It might be a bit costly than your regular mattresses, but the health benefits it provides can make it a worthwhile investment.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHILE BUYING A MATTRESS
With many options available in the market, it is necessary to know what suits your needs the best. Let's go through some of the important factors you should consider while choosing the right mattress:
Mattress Firmness and Thickness: It is important to find the right thickness and firmness of the mattress when you are making a purchase. The ideal thickness should depend on the weight of the sleepers and whether someone sits on the bed during the day, or it is only used at night for sleeping. For Back Sleepers, a medium-firm mattress would be advisable as it will support the spine and align the back and hips well. Side Sleepers would need soft-surfaced mattresses as they need cushioning for the shoulders and hips while ensuring proper body alignment. Stomach Sleepers need a mattress that falls on the firmer side as it prevents the body from sinking too deep and provides optimal support to the head and neck.
Temperature Regulation: Under normal conditions, the body produces between 500 and 700 millilitres (about 16 to 24 ounces)of sweat at night. It can be higher in the hotter climate. For such times you need a good mattress that has temperature-regulating properties. Look for mattresses with breathable materials like latex or memory foam. These foams allow proper air flow keeping the surface cool, comfortable and hypoallergenic all night.
Motion Isolation: If you are a light sleeper or have a partner who gets disturbed at the slightest disturbance then mattresses with motion isolation should be your preference. These mattresses absorb motion, minimising noise which allows you and your partner to sleep well.
Back issues: If you have neck, shoulder or back problems, make sure that you consider the same while buying your mattress. If the troubles are serious, go for mattresses with orthopaedic support only. If it is just the beginning, consider the mattress thickness and firmness that is recommended by your doctor.
Allergies: If you are asthmatic or have any skin allergies, then go for mattresses that are anti-allergic, and are easy to clean/maintain.
Warranty: Nobody wants to invest in a mattress that loses its shape and firmness in a short period of time. Always check the warranty of the product before making the purchase. Most popular and trusted brands offer a warranty of 8-10 years.
Check Customer Reviews: Reading the customer reviews will help you understand the real feedback of the product and the brand you have chosen. This will help you make an informed decision.
Certifications: Certifications help assure that no harmful chemicals were used in the making of the product. It is always advisable to go for brands having standard certifications so you and your loved ones can stay safe from the hazards of poor-quality products.
All the above requirements are met when you invest in a good quality mattress. It is better to choose one mattress which not only promises you good health but also longevity. Your right choice will help you save your money and health in the long run.
